Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us) (Matthew 1:23).

The wonder of Christmas is that God comes down. Jesus humbles himself, leaving the glory of heaven that he deserves, to be born a baby in Bethlehem. But if we leave Jesus in the manger, we miss the point! Jesus grows up to live a perfect, sinless life, knowing he would lay that life down to reconcile us to God. The innocent, perfect, holy Messiah that Israel waited for is mocked, humiliated, and executed in the most brutal form of capital punishment. He conquers death and rises from the grave, exceeding all expectations of God’s promise to Israel and revealing that his plan of salvation extends to all people. He ascends to heaven with the promise of his return. Until then, we can experience his presence through the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing (John 15:4–5).

Immanuel, you gave your life so we could be forgiven from our sin and have new life and experience your presence. Make us aware of habits, thoughts, and attitudes that need to come under your control. Give us courage and resolve to repent. Thank you for your gift of your presence.
