And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10–12).

Joseph and Mary are required by decree to travel from Nazareth to Joseph’s hometown of Bethlehem. Jesus is born here as prophesied. An angel visits some shepherds nearby. They are terrified. Angels tend to have this effect— that’s why they’re always prefacing their news with “fear not”. I’ve often thought of the angel’s message in terms of an announcement, but it has all the elements of an invitation:

  • Who: you, all the people
  • What: good news of great joy; a Savior, who is Christ the Lord
  • When:  this day
  • Where: in the city of David

Then the angel gives them something to look for (like balloons tied to the mailbox) to indicate they’re at the right place: “You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger”. After a massive group of angels appears giving glory to God and proclaiming peace on earth, the shepherds take off to find this baby. They share all that happened, glorifying and praising God in the process. The birth of the Savior of the World isn’t only announced to lowly humble shepherds; they’re invited to meet him. It’s an open invitation to all, even now.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28–30).

Savior of the World, forgive us for letting fear paralyze us. Give us the courage to hear your message and respond to your invitation. Today is the day for salvation. The time is right now.
