I have an incredible Christian heritage that I grew up thinking was normal. Both of my parents were raised in Christian homes. Christmas with my grandparents (on either side) was always about Jesus and that is a tradition my family is happy to continue today. We have had a special Christmas tradition for as long as I can remember with my mom’s side of the family where we “act out” the Christmas story as my grandmother then and my mother now reads Luke 2:1–20 and Matthew 2:1–12. There’s actually no acting involved, but much singing and many costumes! All of the “great-grands” dress up like Mary, Joseph, wise men, angels and shepherds for the reading of the Christmas Story. Before there were great-grandchildren, there were grandchildren. That is when my generation participated in what has become known as the annual Christmas “production”. We still use the word “great-grands” even though the youngest great grandchildren never met their great grandmother. As for their great grandfather, some of their parents didn’t get to meet him. Indeed our loss is heaven’s gain.

Some may wonder why I’m writing about Christmas in February. You would have to understand my family. We don’t get much snow where we live. What we do get is ice. There was a really bad wintry mix the night of our Christmas party so we had to cancel. Our extended family is large. I have a dozen cousins on this one side of the family so rescheduling before Christmas would be impossible. My oldest daughter was thrilled to be Mary… on February 20th. We like our traditions!
